Intro
Most people have an old jigsaw puzzle lying around and this is a wonderfully creative way to give the pieces a new lease of life. Paint the pieces in a variety of colours then arrange them into an image, for example using reds, oranges and browns for the autumn leaves of a tree. The finished effect can be beautiful and the activity is both soothing and reflective.
What you need
- An old puzzle (ideally with a few hundred pieces)
- Different coloured paints
- Paintbrushes
- Large sheet of card
- Glue
- Frame (optional)
The Activity
- Discuss with your budding artist what image they’d like to create
- Sketch an outline of the image on the card as a guide
- Lay some newspaper to protect your table
- Spread a handful of the jigsaw pieces on top of the newspaper
- Choose a colour and paint one side of the pieces, then set aside to dry
- Take another handful of pieces and another colour and paint them
- Continue until you have all the colours you need
- Once the pieces are dry, assemble them into your chosen shape and glue them to the card to create your image
- Frame and display
