  1. A photo of the person
  2. A variety of magazines
  3. Thick card
  4. Glue
  5. Scissors

Intro

Oscar Wilde once said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken”. So let’s celebrate who you are by showcasing the unique things that make you, you.

Simply start with your favourite photo, and fill the space around it with words, pictures or cut-out images from a magazine. Think about what you like to eat, your favourite place, your name, things you often say, how many children you have – and anything else you’d like people to know about.

This is a great 1-on-1 activity for introducing people, such as a resident to a new support worker. It gives a quick insight into who they’re spending time with. It’s also fun for groups, as conversations will be sparked, and stories told along the way

Top tip

Don’t have any magazines? Just write, draw and doodle around the photo instead. The key thing is to make it as personal as possible

The Activity

  1. Explain to the person or people what they’re creating
  2. Invite them to flick through the magazines and pick images or words that resonate with them
  3. Spend time looking at the images and stories, and start conversations around what you see
  4. Ask things like, “What’s your favourite food?”, “What job did you do?”, “Where do you like to go on holiday?” and “What outfit do you love most?”
  5. Cut out anything from the magazines that they like, or means something to them
  6. Keep going until they’ve got enough material that shows who they are
  7. Glue their photo onto the middle of the card, and arrange the words and magazine cut-outs around it
  8. Fill in the gaps with meaningful handwritten words, like the name of someone special or a favourite pet
  9. Once done, you can use it to kick-start conversations with new people, or as a point of discussion for reminiscing
