What you need

  1. A variety of coloured small items from around the home
  2. Coloured boxes

Intro

Keep restless hands busy with this colour sorting activity.

Simply get some colourful boxes then hunt around the home to gather a variety of colourful items to match them. This could be absolutely anything from plastic cups and child’s toys to socks and books. The aim of the game is to pop the items into the right box.

It’s a wonderful, calming activity for people in the later stage of their dementia journey.

Top tip

Don’t have coloured boxes? Use plain boxes instead and attach coloured labels to the fronts.

The Activity

  1. To prepare, lay out your items (mixed up) in front of the boxes on a table
  2. Invite the person to the table and ask them to put the coloured items into the matching coloured boxes
  3. Pop a few items into the boxes first to show how it’s done (if needed)
  4. Allow the person as much time as they would like
  5. If some items go in the wrong boxes, don’t worry! The main thing is that they’re having a good time
