What you need

  1. A selection of great films
  2. Drinks
  3. Popcorn (if people are able to eat it), or marshmallows or ice cream (both are a great, softer alternative to popcorn)

Intro

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to nights at 'the flicks'… snuggling up on the back seats, drinking 'pop' and tossing sugarcoated popcorn into our mouths.

Nowadays, a trip to the cinema might be too much for someone with dementia. The loud noises, large images and crowds of people might make them feel unsettled. But it’s a different thing if we re-create the fun of the cinema at home.

Host the movie night in a separate room, where there will be no distractions from people walking through, pop on the film and get the treats out!

The Activity

  1. Arrange one or two rows of chairs, making sure everyone will be able to see the screen
  2. Invite everyone who fancies a film to come and take a seat
  3. Stand in front of the group and give them a few film options – the most popular one wins!
  4. Offer round some drinks and snacks, and give everyone the time to get comfortable before the film starts
  5. Let everyone know you are going to dim the lights
  6. Start the film
  7. If needed, have an interval halfway through, so people can pop to the bathroom, top up their drinks and snacks, and stretch their legs. This break will help to keep people engaged and settled
