Benefits

  • Bring Joy
  • Time Together

What you need

  1. A selection of wines and cheeses (red and white wines, sparkling and non-sparkling, plus a some non-alcoholic drinks)
  2. Card and a black marker pen
  3. Crackers, grapes, and melon

Intro

Family visits can be tough when someone with dementia has difficulty communicating. But relaxed social events like wine and cheese nights can help. They bring loved ones together and give families lots of fun things to talk about.

We recommend some calming entertainment like a jazz singer or pianist to set the mood.

Top tip

Do a little research to find out which wines and cheeses pair best together. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Sauvignon Blanc with Goats Cheese
  • Chardonnay with Camembert or Brie
  • Merlot paired with a strong Cheddar or Manchego
  • Cabernet Sauvignon with a Pecorino or aged Gouda
  • Port with Stilton

The Activity

  1. Set a date in the diary and book your entertainment
  2. Prepare your feast by clearing your room and laying out food and drinks on tables
  3. Label your cheeses (including a suggestion of which wine goes with each one)
  4. Gather everyone together, serving a glass of sparkling wine as guests arrive
  5. We suggest you circle the room taking requests for wine, but then suggest people go up and choose their cheeses
  6. Make sure everyone feels included and has someone to natter to
