Intro
Not only does this tasty activity nurture independence, it also encourages healthy eating (if you ignore the chocolate and marshmallows!) Everyone can enjoy the colourful fruit – picking the pieces they like best – then have a go at threading them onto the skewers and dunking them in delicious melted chocolate. It’s empowering for people with dementia to make their own snack; instead of simply eating what they’re given.
Once the skewers are finished, enjoy them together in the garden, as an afternoon snack.
What you need
- A variety of fruits, cut into bite-sized pieces. Such as:
- Melon
- Strawberries
- Bananas
- Grapes
- Raspberries
- Kiwis
- Pineapples
- Clementines
2. Skewers (sharp ends removed)
3. Melted chocolate
The Activity
- Invite each person to choose six pieces of fruit they’d like to try
- Depending on their dexterity, they can either put the fruit on the skewer themselves or you can do it for them
- Place each skewer on a plate and encourage everyone to either drizzle the melted chocolate over the skewers
- Put the plates of fruit skewers into the fridge to chill
- Enjoy the skewers once the chocolate has set
Top tip
Make them extra scrumptious and add marshmallows?
