What you need

  1. 500g of strawberries, hulls removed
  2. 400ml of double cream or yoghurt for a lower-fat alternative (don’t whip the yoghurt)
  3. Ready-made meringue nests, crushed
  4. 1 tbsp ginger cordial
  5. Sprigs of fresh mint to garnish

Intro

Eton Mess is a traditional British dessert, which rose to fame at Eton College’s tuck shop in the 1930s. Beyond having an interesting history and being scrumptious, making it might also trigger memories of childhood mealtimes – either at school or at home.

If you’re doing this activity in a group, give each person a task – such as cutting up the strawberries or crushing the meringue.

Although Eton Mess is delicious any time of the year, it’s a great pud for Wimbledon. So why not pop a match on and let everyone tuck into their moreish creation while they watch?

This recipe serves about 12 people.

The Activity

  1. Purée half the strawberries in a blender
  2. Chop the remaining strawberries, keeping 4 aside for decoration
  3. Whip the double cream into stiff peaks, then fold in the strawberry purée, crushed meringue, chopped strawberries and ginger cordial
  4. Spoon equal amounts of the mixture into 4 cold wine glasses
  5. Decorate them with the remaining strawberries and a sprig of mint in each
  6. Pop them in the fridge until you’re ready to eat them
  7. If it’s Wimbledon, enjoy the fresh, sweet flavours in front of a match!
