Chair Dancing - Movement Activity

What you need

  1. Chair dance moves session plan - download resource
  2. Music (we’ve put some suggestions in the resource)

Intro

“Callin' out around the world, are you ready for a brand-new beat? Summer's here and the time is right for dancing in the street!” Or in this case, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, dancing in your seat!

Dancing is an amazing way to expend energy and have fun at the same time – whether you’re doing it dreadfully or as gracefully as a swan.

This chair dancing session is great for everyone and larger groups. It incorporates some popular dance moves that you may know. But don’t worry about following them exactly, freestyling is great too! And remember to only move as far and as much as able to.

So, get your groove on, throwing shapes like John Travolta and Darcy Bussell – or just listening and tapping your fingers!

The Activity

  1. ·       Gather the group in a large room/space
  2. ·       Before the session starts, play a few songs to get everyone warmed up
  3. ·       Take the session plan and start with the warm-up movements
  4. ·       Go through the movements step by step
  5. ·       Take time with each one, there’s no rush
  6. ·       Encourage the group to take part as much or as little as they wish
  7. ·       If you’re with a more energetic and agile group, you could increase the repetitions
  8. ·       Or, if you’re with a more relaxed group, reduce the repetitions as needed
  9. ·       Once complete, see if the group would like to go again with more music
  10. ·       Always finish the session with the warm-down movements
