What you need

  1. List of animals, with the baby animal names beside them - Download resource
  2. Small prize (optional)

Intro

Who doesn’t love the sight of a cute little baby animal?! A fluffy chick, an excitable puppy, a foal taking its first few wobbly steps… Like all quizzes, this is a great activity to get the brain working (especially as it doesn’t feel like any work all). It’s just pure fun!

People simply have to guess the baby name of various animals. So, for example, pigs are piglets, ducks are ducklings, and geese are goslings. Make it as easy or hard as you like, depending on the group’s abilities.

Try not to let things get too competitive. It doesn’t matter if people get answers wrong; it’s the taking part and learning something new that counts.

The Activity

  1. Gather the group together or sit with the person if one to one
  2. Either read the first animal out for the person/whole group to answer or ask each person in turn
  3. If someone is struggling to answer, people can step in and help – or you can throw in a few clues
  4. Someone might know the answer but struggle to find the words. If this happens, congratulate them for knowing and tell them the answer
  5. Praise everyone for all their answers, even if they’re wrong. It’s the thinking that matters most
  6. Keep scores if you’re playing competitively, and award the winner with a little prize
