What you need

  1. Pride flags - download resource
  2. Rainbow-coloured flowers, streamers, balloons, bunting etc for decoration (you can make these in art activities in the lead up to the party) 
  3. An array of foods of all different colours – see our “Delicious Rainbow” activity to make a fruit platter 
  4. Fruity punches – you can make these non-alcoholic or add a splash of something stronger!
  5. Music/Entertainment – preferably a live performer 
  6. Games, these can be optional extras to enhance the enjoyment of the party for all residents and friends and families (see our “Summer Garden Party” activity for more ideas)
  7. Comfy seats for everyone, especially if out in the garden 

 

Intro

June is Pride Month! It’s all about coming together in love and friendship to mark and celebrate how far LGBTQIA+ rights have come. It’s the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and ensure everyone feels included.

(If you didn’t know, Pride stands for promote, respect, inclusion, and dignity for everyone. And LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex and asexual)

Pride is abundant in fun, colour, and inclusion. So why not use it as the theme for your summer party? You can bring the party to life with everything from colourful outfits to delicious rainbow-coloured food and drink. And if your budget will stretch, you could even book an Elton John or George Michael tribute act. That’ll really get the party swinging!

Top tip

Partying indoors? This can be a little overwhelming for some. So why not decorate a separate, calmer room or space where people can go if they find the crowds too much. You can play some soft music and have snacks and drinks to hand.

The Activity

  1. Do lots of prep before the party to create the decorations and food etc – residents can join in the fun
  2. For the food, use colourful vegetables to make a tart, wraps, pizzas, salads, and kebabs. Use a mix of red onions, carrots, beetroot, tomatoes, radishes, aubergines, sweet potatoes, and red, yellow, and green peppers. (Spend time beforehand chatting to the chef/cook to come up with some ideas for a variety of dishes.)
  3. For dessert, you could make a trifle with lots of coloured jellies, a rainbow cake or various flavoured ice creams – the options are endless 
  4. Make the most of the good weather and host the party outside if it’s warm enough, otherwise throw the party in a large room 
  5. On the day of the party, invite everyone to come along 
  6. Play some background music while you welcome everyone, wave the colourful pride flags, and compliment people’s special outfits 
  7. Serve the vibrant food and drinks 
  8. If you have live music, sit, sing, clap, and dance along to some lively tunes
  9. Encourage families and friends to join in and connect with their loved ones in a relaxed and fun environment 
  10. Later, enjoy the dessert, conversation, and background music 
  11. Make sure everyone has someone to talk to throughout the party
  12. Allow the party to finish naturally once everyone’s bellies are full of drink, food and laughter
