Intro

June is Pride Month! It’s all about coming together in love and friendship to mark and celebrate how far LGBTQ+ rights have come. It’s the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and make all residents  feel welcome and included

(If you didn’t know, Pride stands for promote, respect, inclusion, and dignity for everyone. And LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning.)

Ever heard of Gilbert Baker? He invented the now familiar and iconic Pride rainbow flag with its 8 vibrant coloured stripes. The humble guy declined to trademark it, saying it was symbol for everyone.

In this simple, eye-pleasing activity, we’re going to create that vibrant flag by pouring layers of colourful sand into jars. These lovely decorations are guaranteed to liven up any shelf or windowsill during Pride Month.

This activity is perfect for a small group activity of around 4.

Top tip

Worried about breakages or sand being mistaken for food? Use clear plastic containers instead and secure the lids down with glue.

The Activity

  1. Invite the group to sit at a table
  2. Put the containers in the middle of the table
  3. Ask everyone to help pour the sand into individual bowls
  4. Once ready, ask each person to choose which container they would like to fill
  5. Each person can then take one dish of sand and spoon some into the container
  6. Next, take the end of the spoon and move the sand around the sides in the jar to make a more decorative line
  7. Ask each person to choose which colour they would like to use next
  8. Gently add this into the jar on top of the first colour
  9. Take the end of the spoon and move that coloured sand to where it is wanted
  10. Continue with the next colour
  11. Fill the container right to the top, so the grains won’t move when the lid is on
  12. Secure the lid in place and admire your beautiful sand rainbow!
  13. Pop them around the home for everyone to enjoy
