Intro

Claude Monet’s impressionist paintings are some of the most popular and famous in the world. He’s painted all sorts from beautiful gardens, scenes of Venice, haystacks, and poppy fields… to his most iconic one by far: Water Lilies. It’s of the artist’s beloved flower garden, which featured a water garden and smaller pond spanned by a Japanese footbridge.

This simple art activity invites you to recreate Monet’s waterlilies as a collage, and chat about this great artist.

Top tip

Doing this activity as a group in a care home? Find a spare wall where all the lilies can be placed as a collage to make a striking display to be admired by passers-by.

The Activity

  1. Invite the person or group to sit at a table
  2. Lay out the coloured card on the table
  3. Ask each person to choose the green card first
  4. Draw and cut out the lily pad template (to simplify, draw the outlines on the card first and pre-cut them)
  5. Ask each person to choose the colour or colours they would like to use for their flower
  6. Draw and cut out the 3 sizes of flower (to simplify, draw the outlines on the card first and pre-cut them)
  7. Layer the flowers on top of each other and glue/staple down in the middle so they stay together
  8. Bend up the petals to give a 3D effect
  9. Glue/staple to the middle of the lily pad
  10. Roll up 1 or 2 squares of tissue paper and glue to the middle of the flower
  11. Once the water lily is finished, show off your masterpiece to family and friends – or pop it on the wall
