Intro

“Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot!” It’s almost time to pop poor old Guy Fawkes onto the bonfire, and see the skies explode with thrilling bangs and colourful lights. How about putting on a fireworks extravaganza especially for residents in a care home? Invite friends and family along too, and let the festivities begin!

Top tip

Did you know that you can now get indoor fireworks too? They’re great if someone would love to see the show, but doesn’t want to go outside or look out of the window for whatever reason. Just dim the lights, set them off and put smiles on the residents’ faces.

The Activity

  1. Once everyone has eaten, wrap up warm and head outside
  2. Ensure that everyone is kept at a safe distance away from where the fireworks are being set off
  3. Have some extra help on hand to make sure no one walks into an area that they shouldn’t
  4. Once everyone is settled at their safe viewing positions – inside or out – let the firework show begin. Cue the oohs and aahs!

Food and drink suggestions

These all make great firework night evening meals and a pudding:

  • Hot dogs
  • Chilli with a jacket potato
  • Butternut squash risotto
  • Yorkshire Parkin (you can make this using our Yorkshire Parkin activity during the day or a few days before the event)

Make some snacks for the night too, such as:

  • Warm apple cider or mulled apple juice
  • Toffee apples are a traditional autumnal treat, although they can be a bit hard on the teeth. So some softened caramalised cinnamon apple slices may be a preferred alternative (see our activity for making Caramelised Apples)
