What you need

  1. A soft ball

Intro

Let’s get the brain pumping and the arms flexing in this fun naming game. It’s super simple to set up, as you only need a ball! Simply throw it from person to person, encouraging each person to name something beginning with a specific letter.

Just pick a theme – anything from animals to cities, and birds to boys’ names – and work your way all the way from A to Z.

This isn’t a competitive game, so keep things nice and light.

The Activity

  1. Invite the group to sit in a circle
  2. Pick a category (‘animals’, for example) and tell the group what it is
  3. Throw the ball to one person and them to name an animal beginning with ‘A’
  4. Once they’ve named one, encourage them to throw the ball to someone else in the group. Make sure the person is pre-warned that the ball is coming their way!
  5. Ask the next person with the ball to name an animal beginning with ‘B’
  6. Carry on like this until you get to the end of the alphabet
  7. Some letters will prove difficult. For example, many people will think of an animal beginning with ‘Q’ that easily! So either leave these tricky ones out or skip them if no one can answer
  8. If someone is struggling, encourage everyone else in the group to help them out! The last thing you want is to put someone on the spot and make them feel comfortable
