Intro

We’ve all heard of the Leaning Tower of Pizza, haven’t we? OK, so it’s ‘Pisa’ but still that’s no reason why we can’t have a Leaning Tower of Spaghetti!

Spaghetti Day, one of the most delicious days of the year, is celebrated on 4th January. Join in the fun with a competition to build the tallest spaghetti tower before devouring your construction for tea. With the exception of the ‘Gherkin’ and ‘OXO Tower’, edible architecture is quite rare, so make yours extra special with either a creamy carbonara sauce, a spicy arrabiata – or traditional Bolognese topped with parmesan!  You can do this activity anytime throughout the year too, as always good fun to do something different and get thinking creatively.

One tip for all you budding builders – the spaghetti is much easier to work with before it’s cooked!

The Activity

  1. Gather participants into 2 groups on separate tables
  2. Lay the spaghetti out with the marshmallows (expect some to disappear!)
  3. Allow each group 15 minutes (or longer if needed) to build their towers using marshmallows as bases to stick the spaghetti into
  4. Encourage the groups to use their imaginations to create their towers
  5. The winning tower is the tallest that can stand unaided
