What you need

  1. List and brief history of LGBTQIA+ icons - download resource
  2. Names of individual LGBTQIA+ icons written on flash cards

Intro

June is Pride Month! It’s all about coming together in love and friendship to mark and celebrate how far LGBTQIA+ rights have come. It’s the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and make all residents feel included and welcome

(If you didn’t know, Pride stands for promote, respect, inclusion, and dignity for everyone. And LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex and asexual)

This simple Pride activity is fun and super interesting. We’re going to look back over history to the present day to explore some of the world’s most influential people in the LGBTQ+ community – from Oscar Wilde to Ian McKellan. We’ll discuss many fascinating things about their lives and enjoy the flowing conversation.

The Activity

  1. Gather a small group in a quiet room/area around a table
  2. Put the flash cards face down in a pile in the middle of the table
  3. Ask 1 person to pick a card from the top of the pile and to read out the name
  4. Discuss with the group if they have heard of this person before
  5. If they know the person, encourage them to share any memories about the icon
  6. If not, use the brief history information and tell the group a little about their life
  7. Encourage everyone to discuss their thoughts about the person, their achievements and what their life was like
  8. Once discussed, ask the next person to choose a new card from the pile and discuss as above
  9. Continue until the end of the session or for as long as the group are enjoying themselves
