Intro

Few things are more uplifting than the sight of a colourful rainbow. But when you haven’t got the perfect combination of rain and shine, just get arty and make one of your own from colourful scraps of magazines, catalogues or comics. The end result is a vibrant collage to brighten up any room!

This simple activity runs over several sessions, as there are various stages involved. It encourages people to work together, as each small group gets just one stripe of the rainbow to complete, and then you put them all together at the end.

The Activity

  1. In the first sessions, get everyone to flick through the magazines, catalogues or comics, tearing out all the pages with colours from the rainbow. You’re looking for anything red, yellow, pink, green, orange, purple and blue
  2. Once you’ve collated a pile of coloured pages, it’s time to cut out or tear single coloured pieces about 1-2 inches square
  3. Put your pieces of red, yellow, pink, green, orange, purple and blue into separate boxes
  4. For the next sessions, you will begin gluing them to the collage
  5. Depending on the size of your group, give each person or small team a section of the rainbow and a box of single coloured pieces
  6. Show people, if needed, how to stick the pieces to the template
  7. Encourage people to keep gluing the pieces onto the rainbow, layering them up until you can’t see the white paper anymore
  8. Let the sections dry
  9. Put the coloured stripes together to create a rainbow and display it on a communal wall, so everyone can enjoy it
  10. Get everyone to sign their name on the mural to show they’ve participated in this beautiful achievement
