What you need

  1. Tongue twisters (tap ‘Email Resources’ for a list)
  2. Blank flash cards (to write the tongue twisters on)

Intro

We all know that Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper, but can we say it aloud at speed?! This rib-tickling activity taps into the memory banks of childhood with a selection of classic tongue twisters. It will create giggles galore, as tongues get tied in knots and words come out jumbled.

Believe it or not, there’s even a day dedicated to this tomfoolery: International Tongue Twister Day is on the second Sunday in November.

This is a great activity for a pre-dinner filler or family gathering for 6 people.

Top tip

There are simple tongue twisters and longer, more tricky ones. So keep the flash card piles separate and people can choose the right level for them. The short ones may suit those at an exploratory level.

The Activity

Before you start, print off or write the tongue twisters on the flash cards

  1. Gather everyone around a table or in a quiet space
  2. Put the flash cards in the middle of the table
  3. Ask one person to take a card and read out the tongue twister
  4. Then ask them to read it out again, but a little faster
  5. If they want more of a challenge, they can try repeating it over and over as fast as they can manage
  6. Move on to the next person to try and new tongue twister
