Intro

Light and flaky on the outside, sweet and tangy on the inside. Mmmmm… an apple turnover that’s made all the tastier, as we will have made it ourselves. This creative kitchen activity invites people to get involved as much or as little as they like, enjoying handling and smelling the lovely ingredients.

Top tip

While the turnovers are cooking, why not use the time to enjoy a cup of tea and reminisce with the At Home Timeslide Cards?

The Activity

  1. Peel and slice each apple into quarters and then into eighths, removing the core
  2. Place the apples in a bowl, coat with butter and put to one side
  3. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together and set aside
  4. Take the pastry and roll this out to ½ cm thick. You want it thick enough so you can cut out 16 squares of roughly 9cm x 9cm
  5. Brush the square with the beaten egg then sprinkle with the sugar and cinnamon mix
  6. Lay 2 slices of apple diagonally onto one side of the square
  7. Take one corner and fold it over to the opposite corner. Press down using your fingers or a fork to close the open sides
  8. Make 2 small slits in each pastry and brush the egg wash onto each
  9. Place each pastry onto the non-stick baking sheets on your baking tray and bake in a pre-heated oven on 200C or gas mark 6 for about 20-25 minutes until golden
  10. Once cooked, whip up some icing and drizzle this back and forth in lines over the baked turnovers. Delicious!
