What you need

  1. A selection of wines(red and white wines, vegan wines, sparkling and non-sparkling, plus some non-alcoholic drinks)
  2. A selection of cheeses (Soft cheeses, blue cheeses, cheddars, low fat cheese and vegetarian and vegan options)
  3. Card and a black marker pen
  4. Crackers, grapes, and melon

Intro

Family visits can be tough when someone with dementia has difficulty communicating. But relaxed social events like wine and cheese nights can help. They bring loved ones together and give families lots of fun things to talk about.

We recommend some calming entertainment like a jazz singer or pianist to set the mood.

Top tip

Do a little research to find out which wines and cheeses* pair best together. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Sauvignon Blanc with Goats Cheese
  • Chardonnay with Camembert or Brie
  • Merlot paired with a strong Cheddar or Manchego
  • Cabernet Sauvignon with a Pecorino or aged Gouda
  • Port with Stilton
  • Vegan Rose with plant based Feta

*Cheese is delicious, but moderation is key, its all about balance.

The Activity

  1. Set a date in the diary and book your entertainment
  2. Prepare your feast by clearing your room and laying out food and drinks on tables
  3. Label your cheeses (including a suggestion of which wine goes with each one)
  4. Gather everyone together, serving a glass of sparkling wine as guests arrive
  5. We suggest you circle the room taking requests for wine, but then suggest people go up and choose their cheeses
  6. Make sure everyone feels included and has someone to natter to
